Do you play any Steam Source games ? Half Life 2 is DX9.0b but Day Of Defeat and Counterstrike are both in a software environment called Source.

I would presume your current card could possibly achieve 60 FPS in DX8.0 in Half Life 2 but in DoD or CS Source it would achieve perhaps 10fps perhaps a little better.

My Current Setup gives me now 130FPS average I mean solid in HL2 but again in Source for Steam as most people observe that fps to 60FPS respectfully with all details set to high but remember that is on DX9.0b capable cards with Shader Model 3.0 that your card does not even support.

Load up the Steam Source Engine and fidget with it the Counter Strike game portion of Source even has a Built in graphics benchmark to rate your system. All DX8 cards do poorly and most cards with less then 256MB even in DX9.0 do poorly because Steam Source for CS and DoD has what is called BLOOM it simulates to the human eye walking into and out of bright sunlight from dark areas of the game incorporating the shader model 3.0 and lots of graphics photo editing real time and that is really what the extra 128MB on 256MB cards is for photo editing because most games never touch the top end of the memory but Source buries all of it and asks for more.

Very hard graphics to run even for high end game systems never mind what happens in 32 player server to your connection and fps due to network and the Steam Source engine manipulation of your hardware and software in a game.

We used to need overkill hardware with supporting software to get good response from other high end games. With Steam Source you need 5X's the rated hardware to get seamless operation from those games online but the reward is out of this world the eye/brain candy is past your imagination in any since of the word. Makes a Console game unit look like stick figures. Accept for perhaps Call Of Duty2 BIG RED ONE..From what I have observed in the commercial it has real console capability's but of course that was the promo in game video and not the actual player combat in game. Source has already achieved this in P.C versions.

I do not even recommend SLI or PCIe current graphics hardware for the new Source engine for Steam because graphics card manufacturers were caught with their pants down on that software and will need to design new GPU units to accommodate the Source code as software drivers are incapable of making up for it.

Guys that invented the new Source engine must have been pushing current hardware to its upper most limits and running special software drivers specifically on those cards simply to design the Source Code for Steam.

I would have liked to been there to see that Magic being done.
