Hello, I have just bought a Efficient Networks Speedstream 5621 router and I must say I am having a rather large difficulty using it. I have followed all the instructions in the manul perfectly and still, it won't recognize its IP address? The leds indicate everything is fine and is communicating properly with the line and the computer. I have used windows xp and 2000. If anybody has any ideas at all, please let me know. Thank you.

P.S. The router has one rj-45 and one ethernet port on the back. (Also an optional serial port for telnet).

is it leasing a DHCP address to your PC?

Are you trying to set the LAN address on the WAN address?

Hmm, I have DHCP enabled on my network adapter and in the tcp/ip protocol. I have it set to "optain IP address automatically". The router is just not responding to any sent packets. I can ping its IP just fine though? I've tried releasing and renew DHCP using IPconfig. No luck there. I know my NIC is working. Does this sound like software still?

Reply to personificator

it's responding if you can ping it. Can you get into the html config utility? Just put the IP address into the address bar of your broswer?

No, thats the thing that has been getting me this whole time. Do I need to get a serial cable and reboot the hardware?

Reply to personificator

what IP address is the router?

also, is there a telnet server you can config with?

Depending on your router, it's CLI / firmware requirments etc. you may need a serial cable to the console port for a Hyperterminal hook up.

I recommend trying to sort this via a web browser and ethernet means though.

Ok, the IP address of the router is supposed to be 192.168.254.254. I can ping this address with DHCP enabled and "obtain ip address automatically". But I cannot telnet to this address. I can also ping 10.0.0.1 which is supposed to be the html config address. But it can't find it when I put it into the browser. Also, on the local area network status, there is no packets being sent from the router. only packets are being sent from the pc. (it shows 0 packets recieved) Which makes me think that the router isn't responding.
Now, if i bought a serial cable and used hyperterminal to access the router and reboot the router that way, then maybe I would have some luck. what do you think?

you've got something screwed up (or the documentation does) The 2 IP addresses (192.168.254.254 and 10.0.0.1) are in different subnets. Therefore one of them is wrong. 192.168.254.254 sounds suspicious. Here's the easiest thing to do: At a DOS prompt type the following:

ipconfig /all

The default gateway is the address of the router, and the address you'll want to put into the browser to connect to the html config screens. Report back the results here.

jlanka is right. Those numbers don't go together. They need to be in the same subnet and class.

I've had a look at the manual for the 5600 series and the default IP for the router is 10.0.0.1 subnet 255.0.0.0

Your PC IP should be within this range. Change it to 10.0.0.2, make your subnet 255.0.0.0 and make your gateway 10.0.0.1

That should be enough to get you talking to the router.

I have done that exact very thing. I changed the ip to 10.0.0.2 and it automatically put it on subnet 255.0.0.0 and put in 10.0.0.1 for the default gateway (in TCP/IP propertys from the LAC). Still no responce. The thing that confuses me the most is the fact that I can ping 10.0.0.2 no problem. But communication is a 2-way process in which I am not getting any. (from the browser that is). When I put this address in to the config manager software that came with the router it says that i might not have the pc and the router on the same physical or logical IP network. "IPCONFIG /ALL" shows that my network card has an ip address of 192.254.64.213. This is on a differn't subnet. Could this be the problem. Getting my PC and router on the same subnet???

I can't see how you can have a static IP address of 10.0.0.2 (BTW if you can ping 10.0.0.2 you're just pinging yourself which doesn't mean a hill of beans AFA the network working, well it means part of the stack is working) and a default gateway of 10.0.0.1, yet when you do ipconfig/all you have an IP address of 192.254.64.213 (which is actually different from your other post). Do you possibly have 2 NIC's? What does it say is your default gateway near the IP address of 192.254.64.213?

Maybe a dial up modem in there too? You sure you're looking at the correct device?

My bad, I got the differnt IP address when I put the tcp settings on "optain ip automatically". But I have come to the conclusion that this damn thing just doesn't work. I wasted too much time on it already. Anybody want a Speedstream router for 25 bucks? Goes retail fro 300!!!

Thank you jlanka and camieabz for all your help. I apprieciate it very much.
