I had windows XP installed on my computer. It originally
had windows 98...it crashed and my repair person
recomended XP. Now my computer just seems to be always so
slow. I have a Celeron processor. Is this too slow for
XP? Should I go back to win 98? It is now a celeron 564
w/64.0 MB of Ram.

Your processor is a slow one (Celerons are closer to P3), but your biggest
issue is RAM. It should be at least 256 MB.

Karen:

(1) A crash is not a reason for installing a new operating system. A
qualified "repair person" would know this and would have identified the
cause of the crash and corrected it. An unqualified "repair person",
lacking the knowledge and experience to trouble-shoot and repair computer
problems, would have performed a clean install of your original Win98. Your
"repair person", in addition to being unqualified, acted unethically by
selling you an operating system
(2) A Celeron 564 MHz is barely adequate to power Windows XP. An
ethical "repair person" would advise against installing Win XP.
(3) 64MB of RAM memory is far too little for Windows XP needs. A
qualified "repair person" would know this and would have insisted that the
machine have AT LEAST 128MB. An ethical "repair person", after advising
against installing Win XP, would recommend (depending on your computing
habits) 256MB to 512MB.
(4) If your "repair person" represented themselves as a
"professional" and charged you for "service", your "repair person" is
unqualified and unethical. I advise you to take Jetro's advice: fire this
person and get your money back. If, on the other hand, your "repair
person" is a well-meaning friend who provided this service for free, then I
advise you to politely decline future offers of assistance from them.

A 500 MHz CPU should run XP just fine. You would be better off with much
more RAM, though. If you could double it to 128 MB or (preferably) go to
256 or even 512 MB, you should see significant improvement.

XP takes more RAM to run, leaving less for your apps, and forcing them to
use the swap file on disk. That is likely the cause of the slowdown.

Fire your repair person and demand the repair money back.

You have a repair person? Neat.

Anyway - although not incorrect in recommending XP, they are incorrect in
recommending it for that PC.

The processor SORT OF meets requirments, the RAM (memory) however is WAY
anemic. 128MB of memory is pushing it, 256 is a happy XP machine and above
that, XP actually starts running like it should.

My recommedation? Go to :

Look for different low-cost new computers, choose your favorite deal and
start anew.

Get a program such as the Bel Arc Advisor www.belarc.com or
Lavaly's EVEREST Home from www.lavalys.com and find out the
exact make and model of your motherboard and then get the
motherboard manual. It will tell you the maximum amount of
RAM supported. If the mobo will support 512 MB it will go a
long way to allowing XP to run well. Also, you need a large
enough hard drive to handle XP and the applications and data
files. A faster hard drive will speed up operation.
If the present hard drive is less than 10 GB and doesn't
have 25% free space the swap file (virtual memory) won't
work well and you'll have more crashes. With only 64 MB RAM
your swap file is in operation nearly 100% of the time now.
This slows it down and could the proximate cause of your
crashing.
