I figure if I'm going to run both Linux and XP Home that I'm better off with an external modem. I don't have an ISA slot in my newest machine. Is my assumption correct?... and any recommendations for a moderately priced external modem that can handle somewhat variable phone line quality.

Thanks in advance. I've been away from this stuff too long.

Why not a PCI modem? It is very hard to find a ISA modem this day. And External one is always more expensive than internal.

depends on how powerful the PC is. If it's a weakling, a WinModem might not be a good idea. Plus Linux may not have drivers for a particular Winmodem.

It's always the one thing you never suspected.

Pick up an US External US Robotics from EBAY!!!

I got an external 56k V90 USR Sportster offa Ebay - $26bucks plus shippiny!
Was about $35 total to my door...
EBay has plenty of em - take you pick!

Twas the best thing I ever did for Linux! NO problems now!
(but XP doesn't like external modems- if ya don't have th moden ON when ya start(boot XP), it doesn't know how to go back an find it!!! Win 2k is OK here, but not XP! But Who'd want playtoy, the WPA(ctivated) Xp(experimment)anyway - over Win2k)

I've heard the Supra externals are good for linux too.
External is definitely the was to go for linux!

Thanks for the information. I already have a External USR modem and I only use it for fax (I have cable connection) so I do not really need another one.
