Hello all, need some advice on what graphics card to buy for no more than
£80. I want to be able to run Counter-Strike Source at a decent frame rate
and have some of the settings turned up at least. Your input would be
greatly appreciated.

An ATI 9600 should be within your price range, steer clear of the SE
version, strive for a pro or xt version. Certainly the 9600 I have used
produced 70fps @ 1024 res with most of the bells and whistles on.

You can have my mx440 for £79.99
Well worth it. ^^
LOL
Seriously though if you want to play CS:S and HL2 with a good framerate AND see
all the fluffy things (and what's the point if you don't, people claiming they
can play HL2 well on an old DirectX 7 card are just fooling themselves, HL2
looks like HL1 on a non DX9 card) then you should really spend more than £80
However if you want to scrape the bottom of the spec barrel and just about
squeeze a diamond out of a turd then head on over to
the second one down a 9800 pro for £80 but if you are planning to stick it into
a 600Mhz P3 with 128MB RAM running win 98 then don't bother, CS:S is CPU
intensive and really anything less then a 2GHz P4 or AMD equivalent with 512MB
RAM just won't be able to drive any card well enough to get playable FPS in a 24
man firefight.

The card is for my brother. His spec is quite ancient by todays standards
and he really is on a budget. For this reason i've been looking at the 2nd
hand market on ebay. There are an awfull lot of people that are selling
their decent AGP cards in order to make the jump to PCIe. I've just made the
jump myself and bought an ATI X850 XT PE. Very tasty and it's because of
this my brother is now pineing for frame rates.
His specs are :-
Gigabyte mobo (266 fsb)
Amd 2400 xp
512 MB Ram
GF3 Ti200 (this is what needs replacing first)
As you can see the whole system is due for upgrade but on the budget we
should be looking at the graphics card first in my oppinion. I've seen a few
decent cards out there in and around this price. The 9800 Pro being one of
them. Also in the running is the FX5900 OTES. I'd like to hear your opinion
on either of these cards as well as any i've missed on the way.
Thanks guys.........

Hi
I had a 9800 Pro... Now gone to a X800XT PE
The 9800Pro however is very good for CSS and can be picked up quite cheap
now.

Ok, I've got a "watched list" as long as my arm on Ebay. Mainly full of 9800
pros. Given the choice though, what would you choose between the 9800 pro
and the FX5900 OTES?
Btw, thx for that article, very intresting read.

A 9800 Pro is much better if you plan on running DX9 games.
