I'd heard similar things when considering whether to buy a PPC or a Palm
machine.
After talking to lots of owners who'd just got a PPC to those who've had
them for a while-
They seem to hang more frequently when you first get one and are
installing/removing programs fairly frequently. Once you have the machine
settled the resets get to be very infrequent. No one ever gave me a feeling
of confidence that it stopped altogether despite one or two attempts to do
so.
I got the distinct impression that Palm owners had more problems with
resetting PPC's than PPC owners did- despite them not having a PPC.
Bear in mind memory contents are preserved when/if this soft reset is needed
(with the exception of documents/files you were working on and were open).
This certainly fitted in with my experience when I bought my ppc. It's weeks
since I last had to reset it, but I think that because of the way memory is
handled I will have to reset it at some point. It's no big deal. I've lost a
few changes to files at times, but the file is there at the last save point.
Now a confession- I did once lose all memory contents when it needed a soft
reset. I never did find the reason, but I was installing/deinstalling lots
of things, and learning the machine (playing?) around that time. It only
happened once, no sign of this again, and from what I've gathered this is
very much the exception. (The batteries were charged before anyone points to
this). It was worrying at the time, now the worry is almost much
non-existent. Almost, not totally gone.
My ppc comes with backup utilities- it restored to the last saved backup
without problem. At the time I was backing up regularly because of all the
changes I was making, I have to admit it's not so regular now, but my ppc
has a utility that will automatically back up the machine just before the
battery dies (I've tried it- it works. I like to have at least one try while
practising before trusting to such things) as well run it when I want to. It
even has another backup utility that you can run at any time.
(Yes- 2 different backup utilities supplied with the machine. Worrying at
first, choice and reassurance later).
My final thoughts as a long term pda user, but fairly recent to ppc's (about
a year now)
- I do like ppc's, despite the limitations. (Unless you spend even more
money- No printing, poor excel .....)
- battery life is not good, make sure you backup. This is more noticeable
with regular or heavy use. Mine has battery saving utilities but 6-10 hours
run time (which is good compared to most ppc's) is just acceptable,
certainly not anything to be too impressed with.
[This machine battery is not easily swapped (apart from not being able to
source a replacement yet- my maker doesn't respond to emails). Some machines
have easily swapped batteries and larger capacity batteries (although mine
does seem to have a longer battery life than these in standard/normal trim)
and I'll look more carefully at such things for my next purchase- no brand
loyalty in this case even though I do like the machine.]

My PPC hangs a lot. I think it occasionally has to do with 3rd party
applications left open when the device is powered off. Some applications
are just more dodgy than others.
I'm shutting down all my applications before I power off now to see if
that makes a difference.

'He' could possibly be tied up with more pressing engagements..
