This is an older system that has been runnning well for years.

A7A266 with XP2100

The other day I added a USB2 card and a new network card. Today I noticed
that it is reporting the CPU as a AMD 667Mhz, the bios has no option to
change other than 667 or 500 MHz The Multiplier is locked on 5. Tried to
change over to jumper mode and it wouldn't boot. Reset the bios and no joy,
pull the USB and network cards out, reset bios, same deal. Anyway, just
ordered a new board from Newegg but if you have any ideas, perhaps this
board can be saved from the trash bin.

The difference between 5X and 13X, is L3 FID 4. The state of this
could be affected by a bridge change, or maybe even something touching
the socket pins. If you got the processor used, maybe someone has
already been playing with the multipliers.

Select "2.5" and "6.5" from the Systembus pulldown, and you'll
see a one pin difference between the codes. (Corresponds to 5X and 13X).

Thanks Paul but I bought this CPU new a few years ago and it has fine up
until now. I did swap out the cpu fan a while ago, it may be possible that
something is shorting these pins? I'll pull the CPU, swab it with IPA and
give if another go.

It was the CPU, I put the 2100 in another machine and it was also reported
as a 500 or 667MHz CPU. I swabbed it with IPA but same thing. Kinda strange
for it to go out in this fashion.

Paul, do you think it will do anything if I bridge the CPU to unlock the
multiplier? Don't really care if I save the CPU, just interested to see if
it may work.

If you are junking the processor anyway, why not ? Maybe working with
FID4 would be enough to get 13X back.

I'm not really an AMD guy, so I don't know all the little details about
bridges versus processor version. There are better people to help you
on that, than me. In fact, USENET might not be the best source of info.
Perhaps posting on an AMD forum, like http://forums.pcper.com (amdmb)
or http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/ could get you more help.

For example, there is a "sticky" thread at the top of this forum,
entitled "Unlocking CPU multipliers":

http://forums.pcper.com/forumdisplay.php?f=4

I hope that your bridge mod can overcome whatever short has
befallen your bridges.

Good luck,
Paul

Well, better yet, I found the receipt and AMD has RMA'ed it. It was a boxed
processor and just inside the three year warranty. :-)
