Problems with USB ports

I was told that virus infection had killed the USB ports, so I re-installed
the operation system (not clean install). I have a USB extension, which work
with Epson scanner and Canon printer all right.

However, XP still refuses to let me use USB mouse, nor would it recognise
Lexar media jump drive.
When I try to access photos via Targus media reader/writer it doesn't want
to know either.

Can somebody help, please.

Hi,

First, make sure your OS is free from virus. You may go to symantec.com to have an on-line virus check.
Secondly, go to My Computer and disable the restore features on all drives. This is to ensure there are no virus(s) residented in the restore files. Reboot the PC. Go to My Computer and enable the restore features and then reboot again.
After reboot, use the restore feature to create a new restore point.

Now, disconnect any USB devices from the PC including the USB mouse; you can use a PS/2 mouse at this time.
Boot in safe mode by pressing F8 key and login as administrator, go to device manager and unistall the XXXPCI to USB Open Host Controller.
If you have USB 2.0, uninstall the XXX PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller as well.
After reboot, windows should found new hardwares and install the USB drivers (assuming you have installed SP1).
Go to device manager and check for the Universal Serial Bus Controller, you should see the USB Open Host Controller and Enhanced Host controller (if you have USB 2.0) and windows confirmed that they are working properly.
Re-connect the USB devices to the PC each at one time. Ensure the connected USB device is working properly before connecting other USB device.

BTW, does all the USB devices are connected to the USB root hubs independently or by using an external hubs?
There may be problems for using external USB hubs that are not self-powered.

Hope it helps.

Peter

By "extension" do you mean an external hub? If so, try those non-working
devices direct into the PC. Some USB devices do not work well on longer
cables, such as those added to attach a hub.
