I can not run chkdsk /f at startup.

I get the message "cannot open the volume for direct
access".

Something must have the volume locked which is preventing
chkdsk from running.

How do I find out who that "something" is?

Thanks

I want to be able to run CHKDSK (or something) to check
out the hard drive, and fix any problems.

So I went in to properties of the drive - checked the two
boxes - got the message that it could not run now but it
would run on startup.

But the problem is that it will not run on startup. It
did run up to several weeks ago. Then I got the message
that it "can not open the volume for direct access".

So something has changed and I am trying to figure out
what it is!

If you have recently upgraded Zone Alarm to version 5 uninstall it and try
again.

Richard.

You Sir, are a genius. Thank you, Richard. Zone Alarm Pro 5.xx was the
culprit. How did you know ?

I had lost the ability to run chkdsk C: /f in just the past few days. Never
occured to me it might be ZAP5.xx

symptoms as I had after installing version 5 of Zone Alarm there was a good
chance that was the problem had the same cause. I was able to put two and
two together as I happened to run CHKDSK immediately after installing the
"upgrade". If you want to see clouds of blue smoke and smell the sweat,
visit the Zone alarm forums it is getting quite busy now ! :)

Since reading your suggestion on ZA5, and reading what S.Heenan went thru, I
tried running an offline "chkdsk", and it failed too. It began, then the
screen became garbled. I uninstalled it, and it then went thru. I am now
(tho it appears it won't happen) trying to get a refund for paying for a 2
year upgrade subscription (I got when 5 was released when I got alerted). My
previous purchase was last June for one year.

I had a live chat with them, and they said a refund isn't possible, since I
already installed the license?? This money issue just may have nailed it
with them as far as I am concerned. Whatever happened to customer service,
and product guarantees? They did say that my license will be adjusted when
the fix comes out, so my current time doesn't for now, but still, they got
my money.

For now, I went back to the 4.5.594 version.

You made a very good call at any rate. Since I was playing around with
fsutil commands, I assumed it was me who created the problem.
I did Google to find this link and a host of others, as well.
