P4P800SE Cannot Get CDROM to Boot - Need Help

I have just built my son a PC using the P4P800SE board.

I cannot get it to boot Windows XP pro on the CD-ROM to install the
OS.

It has one CD-ROM and one PATA HDD on separate IDE channels.

During POST, it recogizes both devices properly. I set in BIOS to boot
the CDROM first.

I have changed IDE cables. I have cleared CMOS and set BIOS up again.

I have tried changing IDE mode from enhanced to legacy and PATA only.

Probably built 10-12 PC's using Asus MB's, and never had this problem.
Any suggestions?

Thanks in Advance...

Greg

Try hitting F8 during POST and see if you get a "Boot From" menu.

If you choose CD Rom here and it still doesn't boot then your disk or drive
aren't working. I assume that this CD works in other PCs?

Besides the disk, check whether the CD-ROM drive works
on another PC. Also, check it's jumpers.

There's also the slight chance that we're experiencing the same thing. I
have the P4P800SE also and experienced the thing you described recently.

Here's my procedure:

1. Boot
2. Press DEL and wait.
3. First screen in CMOS, goto where you think you installed your IDE devices
and press ENTER. i.e. highlight secondary master and press ENTER.
4. If you see the CDROM drive, press ESC, else repeat 3.

===== SKIP 5 and 6 =====
5. You can't choose your BOOT Priority cuz you've just detected it and it
needs a reboot to show.
6. After the reboot you found out that it still won't detect teh CDROM so
you're phucked. :p
===== SKIP 5 and 6 =====

7. After the ESC's and everything looks right on the first screen of CMOS,
hold ATX power switch for 4 seconds to turn off computer completely.
8. Hit ATX switch again. Booting it.
9. Hit DEL, now you can choose your BOOT Priority. Open CDROM and put in
the XP disc (due to next step). Save and Exit.

10. Right when you see the AI Head Logo, hold ATX Switch for 4 seconds to
turn it off (or else it'd not detect your cdrom again and bring you back to
step 1).
11. Hit ATX Switch. Now it'll say "press any key to boot from CD..."

Yay! :)

During the few boots of installation, you might get an error message saying
that it can't find a boot device, ignore it and hold the ATX Switch for 4
seconds to boot. Once you finish installing XP though, whether CMOS detects
the drives doesn't matter anymore. As sometimes I still see that my CDROM's
aren't detected, but XP still sees it in "My Computer".

Weird eh?
