New York Plans to Ban Sale of Big Sizes of Sugary Drinks

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/31/nyregion/bloomberg-pl...

"New York City plans to enact a far-reaching ban on the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and street carts, in the most ambitious effort yet by the Bloomberg administration to combat rising obesity.

The proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle — would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March."

Uhhh, banned larger than 16 ozs. What if I buy two? Sheesh!

Ive got no problem with it, but then again I dont drink shite like that that.....

Who really needs more than 16oz of soda? I know you want it real bad and you're an American so you should be able to eat whatever food size you want but its not good for you. A 16oz soda has almost 10% of your daily caloric content, a large coke from McDonald's has enough calories to be a whole meal.

How much soda do you drink in an average day?

I would also like to point out that the sale of these items is not prohibited just the sale of anything larger than 16oz in certain public places. Worst case scenario: you have to buy two to get your fix. lol

This isn't really a liberal vs. conservative issue. It's more a moron vs. common sense issue. Jon illustrates this perfectly in his segment. Especially when he brought out the Mandy Patinkon and the Hooter's wings. :)

Why not just tax soda that is >16 fl oz? like make it a 10-15 percent tax of sales?
That would discourage, generate revenue, and not 'violate' any rights!

It's not really the point. It's none of the governments damn business how much soda you drink unless................you can relate it somehow to a cost to government or the public. Then they got you; total control over your lifestyle, what you eat, what you drink, and how much.

I've said it before, but it never quites seems to sink in.

How about letting the New yorkers vote on the issue? Since it is their health and they are the government...why no let people vote in it now Bloomberg?

Because Bloomberg is a tyrant with no patience for any sort of political process. These are the people in government that scare me. And we want to give these assholes more power over our lives? sheesh!

I don't know. I keep thinking of running for Rep in my state, but I am not sure of politics! I mean, I will be hated for trying to undermine corruption, I will not put up with lobbyists, and I would want to have my constituents vote before I do.

That is admirable dog, but i'm not sure it will work. People don't want someone who sticks their finger in the wind before making a decision. People follow courage and conviction. Someone who knows who they are, what they believe in, and can articulate those convictions in a way that is not double speak and is easily understood.

If you are interested, start small and local first. Hell, Sarah Palin started in the PTA in her local home town. I'm not saying that's would you should do, just citing an example.
