Can anyone remind me how to get the Epson 640/440 cartridges into the
exchange position when the printer thinks they don't need changing yet?

We need to use cleaning fluid on our old printer and then fit new ink
cartridges, but we can't get them out.

You need to hold down the ink button until you hear the cartridge start to
move. Don't just tap the button.

Thanks for your reply, but it just does a cleaning cycle if it thinks the
cartridges are not empty!

Press and hold the paper load button for at least 5 seconds. The print
head carriage will move to the ink cartridge change position. Replace
the cartridge(s). Press the cleaning button.

Thanks for that. I knew there was an easy way, but it had got wiped out of
my memory.

I've got a 600 - the 640 was just an update of it and the 640
cartridges even fit it, if you cut a small piece off, from memory...
I hold down the insert paper button until the head moves left.
