Sound Card Problem

I re-installed Windows XP on a Dell computer that came to
me with everything already installed. I re-installed it
because of several problems and virus's, etc.... I went
through all the disc's they gave me and everything works
great now, but I can't get ANY sounds. It says that
there is no sound card detected. Did I miss something
installing it, or do I have to go buy a sound card, or is
it something I can get online?

I'm having the same problem and think it's related to the
chipset on the audio card (or motherboard if it's
integrated). You may have hardware from C-Media --
specifically CMI8738 -- and it's known to cause the problem
you're experiencing (according to the MS knowledge base,
anyway). If this is the hardware you've got, you can try
downloading the latest drivers from www.cmedia.com.tw and
see if that helps. It didn't work for me and I've left a
message with cmedia tech support and have my fingers crossed.

My installation was an upgrade and may be slightly
different from a restore.

Also, if the sound card is a Creative Labs Live! or Audigy 1, sometime the
PCI detection routine can scramble the card's firmware.
