large hard drive issue

Hello!
I just installed a new MB (SOYO-K8USA) with a 3400 64 bit processor. I now
have a new Maxtor 200 Gig hard drive (hey...it was on sale).

The issue I have now is WinXP pro only recognizes 127 Gigs of it. I checked
my bios and according to the bios, it says 203 GB on that drive. I checked
the LBA mode and it's set to Auto.

Can anyone give me an idea of what to look for? I don't need the full 200
Gigs, but if I paid for that, I want it to be working right.

Thanks in advance!
Bruce

You need XP SP1 installed and 48-bit LBA turned on to see the whole drive.

I have both of that. All my updates are installed and I checked that LBA is
on in the bios. It's set to auto on that hard drive. I'm assuming that's
what you mean, right? or is it something under windows?

Thanks

It's a windows setting. Look at that article :

That's the same thing. It just enables 48 bit LBA support if you don't
already have SP-1 installed. I not only have SP-1 installed but I have SP-2
installed.

That's what's so puzzling about this. Thanks for the try though.

Same with what ? Has nothing to do with LBA setting in the BIOS if you
mean this.

That's ok. But did you check if the value exist in the registry ? Won't
take much time.

No problem. BTW, how did you partition and format the drive ? Did you
look at disk management to see if it can recognize the whole size of the
drive ?

Good luck again

Now that's a good point MP. The Disk managment Utility shows the entire
drive, but right about 62 Gigs unallocated. Maybe I can use something like
Partition Magic (I think that's what we have) to format and allocate it.
I'll see what I have and try that.

Thanks for pointing that out!! That may have saved me a lot of work! :)

By the way, I said "that's the same thing"...I meant the same thing as what
Jerry pointed out...and that I had SP-1 installed. According to that link
in the MS Knowledge base, it says to be able to recognize the large drives,
LBA has to be enabled. As I understood it, either SP-1 or later has to be
installed or you do the registry fix to enable it. Since I have those
installed, it should have worked, as I understand it. Of course, I could
be wrong! <grin>

Thanks again!

FYI...I just decided to format it through Disk Management. I may merge the
partitions later or just keep it that way.

Thanks again for the help!

Partition Magic 8.x works fine with XP.

:)

What did you use to partition-format the disk in the first place ?
Manufacturer's tools or MS fdisk/format ? Or maybe the XP CD ?

Yes, you are right about this . As the disk management shows the correct
value you don't need any registry editing.

I used the XP CD to format it. All I can figure is since the original
version of XP didnt support the 48Bit LBA, then the format utility on the CD
didn't see it. But after I installed SP-2, then it saw it, just
unallocated. Now that I've formatted it through the disk management, it's
fine now!

Yes. That's why i asked it. That article has some sort of workaround to
enable it when installing XP. It requires some efforts but may be useful
in the future.
