For several years I used an early-generation iPAQ, keeping my Calendar,
Contacts, and Notes synchronized with a desktop computer. A couple of
months ago the iPAQ "died" and I replaced it with a Dell Axim X3. In
this transition I did not loose anything important because the iPAQ was
synchronized with the desktop and everything automatically synchronized
back to the Axim as soon as it was connected.
The Axim has, in addition to its 64 MB "main memory" a 34 MB "built-in
storage" that seems to be a non-removable "storage card." I started
moving my notes to this area using the "Rename/Move..." menu in Notes
because I hope that this gives me better protection against battery failure.
However, I have noticed that when I move a note to the "built-in
storage" it is no longer synchronized with my desktop. And that notes
that have been moved actually disappear from the desktop computer. I
can't find any option in ActiveSync to tell it to synchronize "storage
cards."
I want to have all my notes synchronized between the Axim and my desktop
because I often refer to to them via Outlook when I'm at my desk and
also because of the protection it gives me against failure of the Axim.
So, my question is: Is there any way to have ActiveSync synchronize
notes stored in a "storage card" (at least a built-in storage card)
along with notes in regular memory?

No, Activesync can't sync Notes that are in a storage card. They have
to be in RAM for synchronizing. What you could do is to use a good
backup application like Sprite Backup (www.spritesoftware.com) (or may
be your Dell comes with one) that can do automated backups to storage
cards, so even when you lose data on the road, you'd be able to
restore on the road.

No you cannot.
You need to understand the memory allocation in your PPC. It comes with
64MB of RAM, where your programs and data are stored, that is the only
area 'visible' to active sync. That memory will erase on a hard reset, or
total loss of battery power.
It also comes with 64MB of flashable ROM. The OS and all of the built in
apps are there. Most PPC manufacturers also provide utilities to copy
stuff there. That ROM will not erase. Be aware that the amount of memory
available there is subject to change if you do an OS upgrade.
