P5AD2 Premium for 1st build

Hi all

I have decided to build a PC for the first time. The most I have done before
is replacing a sound or graphics card. I figure its best to go with the new
Intel chipset for future upgradability options, and have decided to build a
system around the P5AD2 Premium board and P4 550 3.4GHz processor.

Is this a realistic aim for a first time build? I have read some articles on
the net saying it is hard to install the processor in these boards because
the pins are on the board and not on the chip.

Also I don't know what power supply I will need and what case it will fit
into. I'm all googled out and need some pointers. Is there a site out there
that can help? It would be great if ASUS (or some other site) had links to
compatible power supplys and cases for their boards. Or am I living in dream
land???

Hi,
I'm sure the choosen MB and CPU will be just fine.
The main thing (in my opinion) when building a PC is to choose a good case.
When assembling all cards, led's fans, etc you want easy access to all
cables, mounting brackets etc. Cheap cases are usually harder and more
difficult to install equipment into. You will also usually find that the
cooling and sound level from cheap cases are poor compared to "brand" cases.

For PSU, go with 500+Watt. Since your HW is expensive, don't try to be cheap
on the PSU to save some bucks.

For my P5AD2 I used an ANTEC TRU550EPS12V ATX and it works great. As for
installing the CPU I would not say it's any more difficult, only different. As
with any CPU you must be careful when installing it.

OS install is a little more difficult because of the many options you can use
for the boot drive or raid set.

Just bult at system using this board...3.4 p4 & 1gb of ram having probs
using Hauppauge - WinTV NOVA and playing vids...pc locks up and restarts
Using a 400 watt power supply but only 20pin, would a 24pin and higher power
supply sort this out ?
All ran ok using old 3.2 p4 and asus p4p800

Go to Hauppauge online and download/install their latest drivers. This has
solved many a problem I've had with TV cards/vid playbacks. The 20vs24 pin
issue is normally not a problem, but after all else fails to solve the
problem...yea...replace the PS with a Good Quality PS with 24 Pins.

Hiya John

I have built a new system with this mobo, and all is well, yes the processor
fitting is a little different, i followed the intrustions and all was fine.
I went for the Enermax CoolerGiant 480W PSU, am very impressed with it, very
quiet, and cools very well. Also ATX 12V V2.0, and has
the connector for the new type of graphic cards.
