I'm on a lptop with one USB port trying to install a Memorex 6142 USB
scanner. I plug it in when called for by the downloaded XP-supported .exe
driver program, but it shows up in device mgr as an "Unknown Device" under
"USB serial bus controllers" saying "no drivers are installed for this
device'" when I check properties.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled (by running the .exe program) many times
and cleaned up the registry following the manufacturer's procedure but it
still won't load properly.

I assume that, when the installation program calls for plugging in the
scanner, it then tries to associate what is next plugged-in with the driver.
But this doesn't happen for me. When I plug in the scanner, I get the "new
device found and ready" messages, but the program doesn't make the proper
association with the driver so I get an unknown USB device installation
instead

Any suggestions as to how to get the scanner to install properly would be
greatly appreciated.

John
