Having problems sharing files between computers on NT4 network and a XP SP2
computer. Each and every access is very slow, and small file transfers take
hours. This is a bi-directional issue.

Firewalls are disabled, and the only thing I can figure out is this must be
an issue with the Microsoft Networking on the NT side not being compatible
with XP.

The XP computer basically becomes too busy for mouse movements during these
activities.

Does XP Home have the Client for Microsoft Networks available? From a MS
Download?

All help will be appreciated.

D. Wells,

You did not say that this was over a wireless network or not, but I am
assuming that this is the case. I would like to recommend, therefore, that
you try this over a wired connection to see if there is any difference.

Now, can you FTP files over the network, and is that slow? Is it slow
between other computers? Is this computer slow when downloading files over
the internet? Please try these cases as well so that we can isolate the
problem.

Client for MS Networks is of course part of XP, and I assume that the way
you are sharing files is over Windows File Shares (Shared folders on
server).

Two ideas that come to mind- possibly you have a virus scanner that is
scanning the data or you have a virus which is doing something with the
network connection. Have you run a virus scanner on this XP machine?

Regards,
Brian
