The wormhole can only be established with stability for a short time when the ship is charging in the sun so that is why Telford can get back to earth but the rest of the crew who went through the gate after him die.
Why don't Rush in the future use that information and open the gate many times to let the crew travel back to earth one by one by dialling multiple times? There is only about 70 people aboard the ship, I don't see why they are not doing this.
