i recently installed an 80gb seagate hdd in a falstaff box
on my computer. i have downloaded the relevant drivers from
the websites and i can see the disc listed under drives in
computer management, but it is not listed in drive
management and i cannot access it in any way. The device
manager tells me it is working perfectly! it does work
perfectly on my laptop running Windows98. i have spent
untold hours trying to solve this, it is driving me mad!

You are a little confusing with your Computer Management, Drive
Management. First, right click on My Computer, Click Manage, Click Disk
Management. Does the drive show up? Also, try uninstalling the
external casing software, REBOOT into Safe Mode, install the software,
REBOOT, and now plug it in and see if it works ;)

Oh, and is it just not showing in My Computer, but shows in Device
Manager (devmgmt.msc)? It is odd that this works in other computers or
on an older OS, but not on this one. :/
