Error Message on new system

I've recently completed assembly of a new system based on an ASUS
A7N8X-E Deluxe and have had two shutdowns within 24 hours. I first got
this error message:

"Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and
needs to close....."

Then immediately after, this message showed up:

"This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and
log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was initiated
by NT Authority\System....

and... Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call
(RPC) service terminated unexpectedly."

Is there any possibility that this is hardware related, or do I have a
corrupt Win XP installation? Has anyone any familiarity with either of
these messages, and so could give me a clue as to what I should be
looking into?

What operating system ?
If XP then check Admin Tools/Event Viewer /System for errors.
The system is perhaps being hacked but unsuccessfully.
Use firewall.

Win XP Pro.

Where do I find Admin Tools? I did a search and can't find this
folder. I connect via dial-up.... could I still be hacked?

It could be something like this. You would want a patch for Sasser
in your hand. Install the OS. Install Sasser patch. _Then_ it is
safe to connect to the internet.

If you connect an unpatched system directly to the Internet,
presumably it only takes another infected machine attacking you
via RPC, to get your new machine infected. It can happen in a
matter of seconds.

If you install an OS take the following steps:
1. disconnect pc from internet connections (LAN or dial-up)
2. format your hard-drive
3. install OS (WinXP or other)
4. install firewall
5. install virusscanner
6. connect to internet and get the latest patches to update the security of
your system.
7. scan all files on your drives for any known virus

McAfee has a free virusscanner called Stinger. It's able to detect the 45
most common viruses/worms/trojans.
The filesize of Stinger is about 921 kb so it fits on a single floppy disc.

Could be any number of things but you can forget its hardware related. This
rings familiar of a known and common WinXP virus/trojan/worm. Have you gone
on the net recently before youve done any security updates, etc, and youve
not got the firewall up? Could be this. If it is, its simple to remove - do
a virii scan to check anyway.

not to pee on your parade, but scanning for 45 out of the 80,000 known
viruses is kinda mute.

Several people have commented that it was an indication of an
infection.... others mentioned the Sasser worm.

I've been running Norton antivirus since the system was started up,
and yesterday I did a complete scan of the system, and Norton found no
infection. Also, yesterday I downloaded and installed all the security
updates for Win XP..... so far I haven't run the system to know if
that has taken care of the problem or not. One other thing I forgot to
mention in the original post..... when I originally started up the
system I had it connected to my "wired" 100 bast-T home network. A
week or so ago I attempted to get a "wireless" network running so I
could connect my laptop throught the house.... and had the new
computer connected up to the Linksys Wireless-G router, using one of
the wired connections to the routed. After I realized that the
addition of the wireless router seemed to coincide with the problem, I
decided to disconnect the wireless..... so that's another
diference..... I'm back on a completely "wired" network.
