I upgraded an OLD compaq laptop (model 7770dmt) from
windows98se to windows xp (home) The upgrade seemed to
work ok, but now the built in pointer and an external ps2
mouse both will not work. Any ideas for drivers, etc?

Who makes the mouse? If it is a Compaq mouse, check their website (now
part of HP.com) and look for drivers for your mouse. I highly doubt you
are going to find them though. One thing you can do, if you have the
driver CD that came with your old computer, you can put it in there and
try finding the drivers on it. If you do find them, you can install them
in Windows XP in compatibility mode.

Instead of doing all of this though, I would highly recommend buying a
new optical USB mouse (preferably Microsoft or Logitech). These are
excellent mice that will last you a good amount of time and always be
highly compatible. They are much better. As for the built in pointer,
you are going to have to find those drivers as well. Unfortunately, OLD
computers aren't very well supported by newer operating systems. This is
their way of keeping the operating systems efficient and fast (as well
as a way to kind of force you to upgrade). ;)
