I'm having a little trouble installing Windows SP2 on a P4P800-E Deluxe.

My system is as follows:

3.06Ghz Northwood with Thermalright XP90
Corsair TwinX 2 x 512 MB
Nvidia GEForce 6800GT
Audigy 2 (Tried with and without)
Maxtor 120GB Hard Drive
WD 200GB Hard Drive
Win XP Home

I bought the P4P800-E Deluxe (Intel 865 with PAT) to upgrade my dating SiS
based P4S8X-X.
Problem is I cannot get SP2 installed and stable on this machine. SP2
installation completes but then hangs after the first restart. The system
(particularly games and Internet Explorer) is extremely unstable from then
on.

I have tried:
Installing SP1 CD then updating via Windows Update.
Installing SP1 CD then updating via IT Managers SP2 Download
Installing SP1 CD then updating with Auto Update.
Installing SP2 Slipstreamed CD straight from Disc.

SP1 installs fine and is very stable, SP2 kills seems to kill it.
Needless to say I've updated to the latest Bios (1004 at the time of
writing) and have all the latest drivers.
I've tried alternating between harddrives, different memory, graphics cards
etc but to avail.
When I switch back (after lots of rebuilding) to my P4S8X-X everything works
fine.

ASUS tech support tell me the above is a known issue with Prescott's despite
the fact I told them I had a Northwood based CPU... They then advised me to
update Bios Etc (Which I had already told them I had done...)

Any help appreciated...... I've read of similar problems here and there but
not found any solutions!

Thanks

Hi,

nearly the same hardware here. No probs installing SP2 here (Bios 1003
with default settings). I`m now at 1005.2 (ftp.asuscom.de), the board is
rockstable. Did you try a "clean" boot (-> MS Knowledgebase) before
installing SP2? You will find severall issues at the MS groups.

If your problem persist, did you install the drivers for your hardware
(maybe you should not, just try installing your OS with standard vga
-without any additional PCI cards-, after upgrading try your
supplementary hardware)

Same board here with the 1005 BIOS, working fine with SP2 but not until I
had updated a few items such as Norton antivirus software and Zonealarm Pro.

My 2 pence worth...

Have you considered that it mite not be the fault of the hardware but a
fault of XP Home? Can you get hold of a copy of XP Pro, it mite make a
difference, it might not. I am running XP Pro SP2 on the same mobo with a
3.2 Prescott and the 1002 bios and it runs fine. I would update the BIOS,
but I see no need.

Remember it mite be microsoft's problem not your hardware problem

The performance increased significantly from 1002 up to now (benchmarked
with everest, ctiaw).
