Fixme, but that's a generated "map", isn't it? (E.g. it is made with an external application.) I don't know. You can already see GPUs and other hardcore stuff. All of them are generated in the same principle, and it doesn't take too much work to do something like these.

But a Minecraft addict may be able to give more info on this. (And these generated stuff.)

(Oh, mcedit it is. Sorry. I bought the game, back in the alpha. Managed to play about 3-5 hours. =D)
March 25, 2012 10:34:46 AM

and to think, for the last 3 weeks i have done very little but watch my little pony.... hate how they make me feel like i'm wasting my life.
March 25, 2012 10:54:16 AM

Cool!
March 25, 2012 11:07:31 AM

back to the age of designing ur grand grand grand pa's underwear using ropes xD
March 25, 2012 12:05:24 PM

Cool stuff. I once made a house out of dirt.
March 25, 2012 12:11:57 PM

but can it divide by zero
March 25, 2012 12:19:28 PM

rothmalbut can it divide by zero

... and what frame rate does it get in Crysis 2?
March 25, 2012 1:10:05 PM

This 16 year old is astonishingly brilliant, for his application to MIT all he needs to do is email a YouTube link. It's simply unbelievable that's all I can say.
March 25, 2012 1:30:20 PM

Is there a "Building a CPU in Minecraft" for dummies book? This stuff is interesting. It's like some really weird kind of ladder logic or something, stone & lava logic?
March 25, 2012 2:01:05 PM

I would love to see a graphical calculator
March 25, 2012 3:11:26 PM

There are people that have built working 8088's in the game.

It's far more impressive if you don't use MCedit, though.
March 25, 2012 3:32:21 PM

too smart and too much time, impressive.

will it run Crysis??
March 25, 2012 4:59:56 PM

All I can say is that when I was 16, school took up way too much time to even think of doing such a feat.

Its not a graphing calculator, graphing implies it can visually graph functions, and it cant. It is a calculator tho.

If he did it himself its impressive. However long before this ive seen people demonstrate all the pieces above. If he just took the work of others and pieced it together, then its still impressive, but its nothing extraordinary.

IF he did everything himself, without the work of others, then im truly impressed.

Its likely he took the adders etc from other peoples minecraft computers and stuck them together to make the above. And remember you dont do a project like this in the real game, you use an editor that allows you to slap things together orders of magnitude quicker.
March 25, 2012 6:12:21 PM

You know what, as long as he learned something building this thing...
March 25, 2012 8:24:14 PM

Still, given the anonymity the Internet provides, you can never be absolutely sure he IS sixteen years old!
March 25, 2012 9:31:39 PM

Can these working 8088s run older/lighter operating systems and software? This seems like a very cool thing to look into. Would be awesome to see something like DOS or something running inside of MC on one of these 8088. It would be so cool to play pong inside of MC.
March 25, 2012 9:41:53 PM

its incredible.. i'm sure when you break it down and understand the different macros and individual systems dedicated to certain functions, it would be simpler to understand how it works. but without knowing all that, its a overwhelming concept to design something like that, and for a 16year old to do so, is amazing. this kid needs to try a real one with transistors and then move on to designing processors.

Why spend countless hours crafting something that one push of a key on your keyboard will bring it up for your pleasure..last time I used scientific calculator was my final exam of my calculus class 6 years ago.
March 26, 2012 3:08:18 AM

"That'sssss a very nice calculator you've got there... It'd be a ssssshame if anything were to happen to it..."
March 26, 2012 4:02:09 AM

Minecraft isn't just a game. It's Life, Logic and Learning :)

I use mine frequently. I am a radar tech and occasionally, there's just no substitute for raw (digital) radar data when troubleshooting really weird problems.

alidanand to think, for the last 3 weeks i have done very little but watch my little pony.... hate how they make me feel like i'm wasting my life.

Well, then stop!

Yeah, I'm a fanboy, but I LOLed over that one. Could have been any CPU company though and got a good reaction. :)
March 26, 2012 7:29:36 AM

It's a cool design but is that required to make the calculator work? The kid did an amazing job.

god if it was only that simple...
i watched the show... now its more or less on infinite repeat in my head... you know that feeling when you remember something, and want to see it again... thats what i feel every 2 hours almost.
than 4chan... the pony board... they are making stories that make me lol like nothing else ever made me lol before. hell there is a mlp/saw story called "advanced friendship: learning is magic" and my god is it good.

or there was one before that was devoted to you explaining world history to a race of creatures whos biggest conflict resulted in no deaths, i loled more than i ever should have at that...

i mean go to pastebin, look up ANONALIGHIERI and the story "Anon and Alexandria Compilation"
the story is written in green text, i think its a type of story telling unique to 4chan, but you get use to it fast, and aside form i think 3 lines of speech... its a fairly good story, and they just dont stop makeing these very interesting stories.

i can probably kiss another couple of weeks of my life goodbye while i read the so far 30~ threads, all with 450-500 posts each where each post is about 3 paragraphs of text long....

if there is one good thing, i have not used pony in every day speech... im using that as a barometer for when i finally crack
March 26, 2012 2:03:44 PM

As Captain Jack Sparrow once said...He needs to find a girl....Brilliant as this is...I never thought of building a virtual mechanical computer.
March 26, 2012 5:47:34 PM

Fixed that for you.

he needs to implement a 'far touch' mod so the buttons can be clicked from a viewable distance rather than running around all over them like stuart little or something - how painful

I see a future electrical engineer in the making.
March 27, 2012 4:36:22 PM

Someone should tell him that there is a calculator included with Windows and most operating systems.

March 30, 2012 5:41:37 PM

Soon we will be playing Crysis in Minecraft...
April 2, 2012 8:51:45 AM

I have this sudden overwhelming desire to network the coffee pot...
April 5, 2012 1:27:49 PM

I'm not impressed. Unless it defends itself against MOBs like a fortress of math, then I will reconsider.

Aspergers much?
April 9, 2012 4:27:23 AM

and i was impressed with myself when i figured out how to make a mob trap...

would suck if someone greifed him... teehee whoops.
