I have tried installed a new DVD/CDRW drive into my machine but am
having some issues.

When I trun the machine on after plugging in the new drive, windows
boots fine and says "found new hardware blah blah CDROM etc"

This popup stays for ages and the whole system slows right down to the
point of not being able to do anything else. The installation of the
new hardware that is has found never finishes and I have to turn the
PC off and remove the drive to be able to use the PC.

I have tried this with 3 different drives now to no avail. If I use a
normal CD drive it is fine and I have no problems.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me... I would greatly appreciate
some help here!

Matt

It is helpful to include the manufacturer and model of the hardware in your request. However, for starters: Verify that the drive is correctly identified in BIOS before starting Windows. If not, update the BIOS. A DVD drive should be identified as a DVD drive. Also verify in BIOS that it is identified as Primary or Secondary, Master or Slave.
If BIOS sees the drive correctly, so will Windows XP. I add this because your post reads "identified as a CDROM".
As an addiotinal check: try to reconfigure the drive itself as CS and be sure to connect it to the right connector if using a dual cable. Some newer machines will not see the drive correctly as Master or Slave.
Good Luck.

Right, I have tried plugging this combo drive into all different IDE
slots and different cables and different jumper settings.... doesn't
matter what I do it's always the same.

Windows boots up, the "found new hardware" thing appears in the corner
saying it's found "Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-352N" and then it doesn't get
any further. I can't open any applications or do anything else as the
machine seems to be busy (although the hard drive light is not
flickering.

I have tried this combo drive and also 2 different DVD drives but they
all do the same thing.

I have plugged a standard CD rom drive in and that just works fine...
but not these!!

If I look in the BIOS, it is identified as the correct CDRW/DVD drive.

Any other ideas as to what the problem could be?

Cheers
Matt

Well, assuming you have all the jumpers and cabling correct, have you
tried installing the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard? Also,
you can try updating the firmware for your CDRW/DVD drive
(http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1761). Finally, check
the settings under all IDE Controllers in Device Manager (Click
Start-Run-Type devmgmt.msc and click OK, expand ATA\ATAPI Devices, right
click on an IDE Controller and click Properties, go to the Advanced tab,
and try DMA if available).

I'm going to try updating the motherboard drivers tonight to see if
that makes a difference.

I can update the firmware for the CDRW/DVD as the machine grinds to a
halt if it is plugged in. Same goes for checking it's properties in
the control panel... can't do it.

Just a warning, you usually want to flash your firmware in a Pure DOS
environment. Go to www.bootdisk.com and download the Windows 98
Bootdisk. Put your firmware on that along your flashing utility, boot
off the floppy and then flash the drive from there.

Well in the end I had to re-install windows to get it to work. Have no
idea what was wrong with it though. Bit of a pain but at least it now
works great.

Thanks for all your help anyway.
