How come then? SATA is supposed to be hot swappable. Are there any
controllers out there that support this?

Uh, do you use an OS that supports hot-swapping of local SATA HDs?
I don't believe that any XP client OSs do, but I'll be interested
if anybody can point to something on a M$ website that says otherwise.

There are NAS devices that support SATA hot swap, and they may
incorporate some code from M$, but that's not the same as expecting
XP PRO (for example) to support hot swap on a standard PC.
