So the MPAA want to preserve the data to sue more people? Oh man, little Tommy next door better had not stored an image of his favorite music artist on mega upload.

You use a back up site as a back up, not a file *sharing* hub site. I don't know about you, but I don't really want my backups to be shared. Either way, Osaeed88 is right. Just another example of how little you actually own your data.

If funny, because MPAA/RIAA want's to control how you use their data (movies/music) even after you purchase it, but don't want you to have control of yours after you upload it someplace. Giving the MPAA/RIAA access to the stored data would be breaking the copyrights & privacy rights of the individuals who's pictures & documents are stored on Megaupload IMO, but I'm not a lawyer. All I know is, they aren't licensed to watch my home movies, and I want them to pay $1k per person per video that they illegally viewed, or I'm suing.

Couldn't have said it any better! By uploading data to some other pc other than yours, your basically exposing your personal information. Just think twice, would you rather save your data to another computer? I wouldn't. Just go buy a couple of TB's (when they go on sale) and save your information on there with trucrypt. You'll feel more safe and secure.

Any yet another article with questionable math...

"94,000 GB"

That's 92TB or about 46 2TB drives.
At $50 a pop it would cost therefore about $2,500 to simple store them offline on those drives and not some $9,000/day. Something is obviously wrong with these numbers.

Geez, is anyone proof reading this stuff ?

ok, follow up as we can not edit...

A 2TB drive goes for some $100 these days (not $50).
So we are looking at about $4600 for the drives. Still less than ever a single day's 'hosting'.

Too many lawyers, all looking for their retirement check in everything.
RIAA attorneys would sue for a video of someone singing along to music they didn't have a mechanical license for, even if the video were password protected and never downloaded.

And the birds... I've seen parrots on video singing songs, and I'm pretty certain those birds haven't purchased performance licenses.

the mpaa current rate is 164000$ per video per person, if i remember correctly.

After ALL the REAL information that's available to us, NOT from the "bought and paid for" mass media such as TV, Radio, newsprint...but from internet sources, how anyone still believes that the people involved in any military, especially the U.S. military, isn't evil , thieves, crooks, murderers etc. ,are fools. But are they ever blessed by their communities for just being in the military... never discovering hoe evil this "Corporation" really is.

OK, and the 850,000 or so were not, so what’s your point? This is a simple case of Dotcom is under heat and he’s trying to shift attention to others. Stay on point! Who cares if a young military guy (or girl) saves his porn there or not! I know I could not give a shit less.

I had a life time paid account on Mega upload, and was using to download /exchange game mods in Oblivion that were too large to be hosted on the game mod site tes.nexus.com. There's nothing illegal or shady about it. Yet some game mods held on that site are available no where else -- looks like torrents are alot safer place to keep data... can survive there for months, easily or longer if popular and no central listing site to take down with the new protocols. Screw our bought and purchased 'justice' department. May they rot in hell with their MPAA bosses, and the the congress critters they bought who didn't vote against the recent attempts by the MPAA to push their written legislaation into law on the people....That their spokesman had the nerve to go on Fox and threaten them with having their funding cut off -- supposed 'donations'/'contributions'... but obviously not considered that by the industry!..

If i owned the hosting site I'd give the govt 1 week to pay me for the next 5 year's worth of storage at 25,000 per day including fees... or i'd say FU and pop a DBAN

Not if you wish to keep your business license and avoid regular audits by the IRS.
Ah yes, and interfering with a criminal investigation can also get you into hot water.

The $9,000/day number is utter bull as I pointed out a number of times ( I own an IT company, so I know just a little bit about actual server costs) - and received a truck load of thumbs down for.

yes you have an IT company, but no knowledge of criminal proceedings.

when there is ever a case around a computer, they always take EVERYTHING. the screen, speakers, mouse, keyboard. some times even the router(depending on type of criminal suspicion).

they have to take everything cause if the computer is not in the same state as what you had it, then it is tampering with evidence. and the case can get thrown out.

so the cost is the cost that this company needs to pay to keep their equipment offline.

your thumbs down is your arrogance in simplicity.

I think the MPAA should just release the data back to the users and close things up. They got what they set out to achieve, which was to take down a major distributor. Keeping the data so they can gun for individual users is a backward step in my opinion and a huge waste of time, resources, and rep points for pissing all the innocent bystanders off. I know they're just trying to do their job, but it's like taking down a bunch of criminals in a building, jailing them, but then refusing to let the innocent bystanders out because you're afraid you might of missed someone. Trying to cover your own backside at the expense of others should only go so far, and they're going beyond that point.
