My new USB pen works fine on my office machine - running XP Pro. 512Mb of
memory.

On my home machine - also running XP Pro - It appears as disk J and
everything appears to be working well. The Device Manager says it is working
fine. - but it isn't.

I cannot read anything to it or from it. And when I check its Properties it
is read as having zero capacity, zero memory, zero used, zero unused. But it
still works fine on the office machine.

Any help appreciated.

Try opening Disk Management (Right click on My Computer, click Manage,
click Disk Management), right click on your Pen Drive and see if you can
Import the drive, if you can assign it a different drive letter, or
anything helpful. Also, check under the removeable media section too ;)

Do you have a special software program that came with this Pen Drive
that allows you to restrict access to the drive? I know Kingston drives
come with this option and it may be blocked for all computers without
the proper SID.

The only other suggestion I can think of is going to require quite a bit
of technical experience. Do not do this unless you are comfortable with
editing the registry.

Click Start-Run-Type REGEDIT and click OK. Now expand to the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\Vid_Xxxx

Check under each of the Vid_Xxxx and see if any of them list your Pen
Drive as the DeviceDesc or LocationInformation.

If you manage to find the one your Pen Drive is listed under, right
click on the folder it is listed under (the one starting with Vid_Xxxx)
and delete it. Now reboot and plug it back in and see if it fixes the
problem.
