PC POWER NOT SWITCHING OFF

I have upgraded my PC from windows ME to XP pro and when I close down windows in the normal way, the normal messages apear saying "now saving your settings", "your computer is now closing down" etc. At the point the screen goes black and blank as if the PC has switched off but you can still hear the PC as if it is still on, left it for a hour and it was the same vefore switching it off.

There was no problems before with closing down the computer.

Can anyone help me?
