I am helping my niece set up a wireless network at her apartment. She has a
new Sony laptop with windows XP Home, a cable modem with a Linksys WRT54G
router. Everything is working fine but I was wondering how to make the
network more secure. She would like to prevent her neighbour from logging on
using her router for example.
So far we have turned off file share in her laptop, changed the access point
name from Linksys and changed the router configuration password. Shall we
enable WEP and how? also SSID anything else?

She is up to date on AV and windows patches and promised to keep those
updated but what else could we do to make her network as safe as possible? I
know there is no silver bullet for this but would like to help. Appreciate
any help and please give us directions in plain English
Thanks

Enable WEP and select the option not to broadcast your ssid.

The best bet for SOHO wireless solutions would be to use
WPA with PSK. Use a passphrase/password that is at least
8 characters long.
WEP can be cracked in 20 minutes (40/128 bit keys).
