Dell 8200 has both CD-RW and DVD reader; both exhibit the
following problem:
After machine has booted, if I insert a CD in either one
and try to read it, I get an error message that includes
the phrase "incorrect function"; if, however, I restart
the machine with a CD in the drive, then, after booting
has completed, I can read the disk and use it
appropriately (e.g. install a program from it); I still
can't however remove the CD, reinsert it and read it (same
error message occurs). I googled the error message and
got several hits, but nothing with quite the same symptoms.
I also booted to safe mode, removed the drives from the
device list and rebooted (to redetect/reinstall) with no
change in symptoms...checked event viewer for any obvious
system messages like ATAPI or IDE failures, but nothing
obvious to me...
