I have an ADSL wireless router (IP: 192.168.0.1), this broadcasts the ADSL signal to 3 other computers, including mine (IP: 192.168.0.2).
I connect the Xbox via ethernet to my PC (the router is too far away to connect directly), and the Xbox gets a IP address of 169.254.84.88, additionally it says 'Limited or no Connectivity'.
I want to get the Xbox on the internet to play Xbox live, what am I doing wrong?
Are you sure you have the correct wire? Hub to computer connections use different wires then computer to computer connections.
You can make a cut/tape DIY crossover cable from a normal one, I suggest light-fixture connections. I don't know if this is an optimal solution, probably not, but it works just fine for my 100Mb connection.
So, change router IP, connect Xbox, enable ICS and I'm good to go.
Anyone know the subnet settings I need to have? atm it is 255.255.255.0 for PC -> Router, but the Xbox by default has 255.255.0.0 - I don't have a clue what a subnet is either
Don't you have a router. I thought the only way you could play online through a PC ethernet was with XBoxConnect. I haven't experimented though so I'm not sure.
Right, after hours of messing around I finally got it working.
You need to use ICS, not a network bridge.
Firstly, ICS requires that IP 192.168.0.1 is free, by default my router is that IP. So, I changed my router IP to 192.168.1.1
Then, I altered my 3 PC's to have IP's of 192.168.1.2/3/4 (Putting them on 192.168.0.2/3/4 resulted in timing out when I tried to access anything - Can anyone tell me why?)
Then, using a cross over ethernet cable I bought, I connected the Xbox360 to my onboard NIC. I set that NIC IP to 192.168.0.2, it's gateway to 192.168.1.1, and the DNS server to 192.168.1.1
At the Xbox end I set it's IP to 192.168.0.3, gateway 192.168.0.2 and the DNS server to 192.168.1.1
it shouldnt be able to access it via 0.1 because it would be on a different network. thats why it worked with 1.1 beasue you changed your router to 1.* ; make sense?
also subnets are used to define the class of network as well as boundaries of that network.
