I recently upgraded a clients PC from ME to XP. When
trying to setup DUN using XP I get a message in the
dialup properties that states the device is missing
(COM1). The modem shoes up fine under the device manager
and queries OK. Another twist to this is that when I
setup an e-mail account using AOL, it seems to setup just
fine and will dial out OK. However when it dials, it
always dials 3 times before it connects (no matter what
order the numbers are in) before it will connect. After
it connects, I can see the e-mail but will not allow
internet access. When I go back to look at the
properties of the device (for AOL) it says "device
missing - com1". I've even put in a new USR modem. I've
seen this problem posted on other sites, but no one seems
to have the answer!!!

Can anyone help me with this????

Do you have a COM1 installed?...in both the BIOS and in the operating
system?

What IRQ is it querying to?

Does it just keep on dialing?...or are there error/warning messages
each time?

Sounds like a DNS problem. Try pinging AOL...which should probably
work. Then try pinging somebody like Google, etc.

What program(s) are you trying to use to access the Internet?

The properties of WHAT device?

I'd start by uninstalling AOL...or the other DUN...whichever one yer
not usin'.

Good luck.

Have a nice week...

Trent,

Thanks for replying...Let me start by answering your
questions.

The BIOS is showing that com1 is installed.

I don't remember the IRQ - I'll check tomorrow (the PC is
at work).

I get timeout messages for the first two numbers before
connecting on the third. Makes no differance with
sequence.

Re-installing AOL makes no differance.

The DUN properities of the AOL dial-up are giving me the
error "missing device - com1". I get this same error
when I try to create ANY DUN connectoid. When I create
any DUN connectoid it appears under "Dial-up Connections"
with a big red X through it with the message "missing
device - com1". I've even tried making a connection to
earthlink, with the same results.

I've set many of these up in past with no issues.

I remember a long time ago an issue similar to this and
re-installed a new copy of unimdm.tsh, which fixed the
problem. I'll try that tomorrow too.

Hope this answers your questions. I'll let you know how
I make out and post the solution...

I just wanted to post a message that I have received
numerous inquiries regarding just what the solution is to
this problem. It seems that there are many people with
the exact same issue. When my customer brings the PC back
in to me, I plan on trying a few things and when I get the
solution I'll let everyone know!!!
