I have a HP Media Center with a 300n dvd writer / cd
writer combo drive. The problem is that the drive does
not recognize blank or recorded disks - it will play a
store purchased audio cd and a dvd movie - but will not
record anything or even recognize a recorded or blank
disk is even in the drive. Have changed drivers and
thrown all HP suggestions at it with no luck.

Click Start-Run-Type devmgmt.msc and click OK. Now click the + next to
DVD\CD Drives. Right click on the drive and remove/uninstall it. Now
reboot and see if that fixes anything. Also, you can try removing its
information from the registry. I'll explain that later if it is
