I have a motorola 4200 usb broadband/cable modem that shows up as driver
unknown under usb when I start or restart windows. It just won't stay
installed. I've turned off power saving in the usb root hub.
Once installed it works fine until I restart.
any ideas would be grateful.

You can fix that problem very easily:
Connect the Cable Modem using the Ethernet cable instead of the USB
cable. Not only will you have no software problems, you will have a
faster, more reliable internet connection.
Of course this requires that your Cable Modem have an Ethernet port,
and that your computer have an Ethernet port.
