Check BIOS setup that the port is enabled. In older systems, the PS2
port must be populated at boot; just plugging the mouse into the port
will not enable it since the port is not plug and play.

Can you name the make/model of you mouse?
Is the usb to ps2 adapter an "active" device that converts USB data into
PS/2 data?
If it's just a "hardwired" adapter, then the mouse needs to support both
modes.

What about buying an USB hub? They are very cheap nowadays.

Depends entirely what devices you intend to connect to it. If you are not
sure you need a powered hub in case the combined current draw of the devices
exceeds that of the port.

A power transformer (brick) that plugs into the 110-120 volt
AC power and is converted to 5 VDC.

That would be the first thing I would do. Open up the case and see whether
they are connected to the MB, should take more than ten minutes.

Most "powered" USB hubs also work in "unpowered" mode, if the extra current
is not needed.
So you might not need to use the USB hub's power transfromer if the devices
you intend to use work without it.
