Cool and Quiet

I currently use a Zalman 7000 on a AMD64 3500+ and A8V Deluxe. The manual
says you can only use Cool n Quiet with the AMD CPU heatsink and fan
because there is a special chip in the heatsink.

Does this just refer to the facility to send back speed information or am
I missing something?

{Apologies if this message and future replies double post. ISP
investigating.}

It seems like Asus is just trying to "cover their ass". "Cool and quiet"
should not include motherboard controlled fan speed variation, hence the
recommendation from Asus to use the AMD HSF with fan speed controller (if
the mobo controlled speed based on diode temo, why should there be a demand
for a sensor chip on the HSF itself?). The fan speed controller is not
reporting back to the mobo, it is just regulating the fan speed locally. As
AMD states, any HSF will do, but for lower noise they recommend using a fan
that can control speed. "Cool and quiet" function, at least the "cool" part
of it has nothing to do with type of HSF at all.
