Good Morning,

I am looking for your help to clone my hard disk.

My computer is Compaq Presario Notebook, operating system is Win XP Sp 2. I
have a new hard disk and would like to clone my hard disk to this new one.
Please kindly tell me the easiest way to clone.

I have Norton Ghost and Power Quest Partition Magic v.8.

Please help me.

Luise

I would actually use the software that came with the new hard drive if
that is possible. If not, Norton Ghost would be my next choice. Just
make a ghost image as per the instructions and copy the image from one
drive to the other. Not sure about Partition Tragic since I don't use it :)

Cloning on a Laptop is not the easy process that it is on a desktop.

Indeed it is virtually impossible.

You will need to remove the existing HDD and take both new and old HDDs to a
desktop PC.

Find an appropriate Desktop IDE to Laptop IDE connector [it will also need
to provide power to the HDD]. Most PC component stores or electronics stores
have them.

Unplug the Desktop IDE interface cables [at the MOBO socket, not the drive
connection] and connect both drives existing [old] to IDE0 and new to IDE1.

Once you have connected these two drives, boot up the PC inot run IDE
detection on the Desktop.

Boot up froma Windows 98 Boot disk and run FDISK to Partition and format, or
use Partition Magic.

Insert the Norton Ghost boot disk and reboot the PC.

Run Ghost, carefull checking that you use the existing HDD as source and new
HDD as target [obvious by size of used disk space].

Once you have Ghosted [cloned] the HDD unplug the new drive and place it
back in the Laptop.

Having done this try booting from the new HDD, remeber to run BIOS IDE
detection to set BIOS to the new HDD.

If Windows doesn't bootup, don't panic. This sometimes happens when you
change HDD type and model in this way.

Run a repair installation of XP. Make sure you have your valid WindowsXP key
Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD.

At the second R=Repair option, press the R key

This will start the repair

Eventually you will be prompted for your XP key

Now if all this appears tooooo much, you can always run Files and Settings
Transfer WIzard to backup all you data , internet settings, email etc. This
will create a file on the HDD that you can copy off to CD / DVD or networked
PC.

Then remove you HDD and plug in the new one.

Boot up from the COmpaq Recovery disks and pray that they will reimage onto
your new HDD without getting upset by the configuration change. You may then
need to install Office and all other apps.

After this, run FAST Wizard again and import the file that you created
earlier.

No matter what you do this will take time and patience. Now you may
understand why many people assemble or by a USB external HDD.

Luise,

You need second computer in your case. Acronis True Image product
(www.acronis.com, $50, upgrade $30) creates disk image on-the-fly from
within Windows and this image can be saved on the network share.
If the Ghost is the only option, you need laptop/desktop IDE adapter,
connect old laptop disk to the desktop, and clone.
