I recently got a DeskJet890C out of mothballs, put in fresh
cartridges, and began printing photos via Fedora Core 1 / hpijs
printer driver.

I am finding that the shadows look "solarized."

Example images (highly compressed jpeg's) are located at --
Originals:
http://www.danlj.org/~danlj/photos/Printer/Bertha0026.jpg
and
http://www.danlj.org/~danlj/photos/Printer/Bertha0024.jpg
and the prints of these images at, printed on HP Premium Photo Paper,
http://www.danlj.org/~danlj/photos/Printer/BerthaPrint.jpg

Does anyone have any suggestions on what might cause this, or an
efficient way to troubleshoot?

Thanks

It appears that the printing is being done in plain paper mode rather than
photo paper. I do not know if the Linux drivers have any capability for paper
selection, but this would be a place to look.

The pigmented black ink is not compatible with photo paper printing. The HP
drivers for the DeskJet 890C will mix color inks to make black when photo paper
is selected.
