Hi - need some help.
My monitor keeps "pulsing". Almost like the screen is
being slightly squeezed on all sides. It's a visual
nightmare that's making me nauseated.

I'm wondering if the monitor (recently borrowed from a
friend because my old monitor died) is incompatible with
WindowsXP. It's an ADI Microscan (that's what it says on
the front) and it's showing up as "Plug and Play" in info
section.

Please help.

Normally I'd assume the monitor was faulty.

Do you know what specific model of ADI Microscan monitor
it is? It should have a model number somewhere, probably
on the back.

There's a small chance the computer is trying to make the
monitor do something it shouldn't do, so you can try
reducing resolution and color settings as far as they can
go. Right click on the desktop, click "properties," then
the settings tab. Drag the "Screen Resolution" slider to
the left as far as it will go, and set the color quality
as low as you can (probably 16 bit).

If that fixes the problem, step the resolution/color depth
up from there.

You also can try installing drivers for the monitor.

Drivers for ADI's monitors appear to be available at
http://www.adiusa.com/download.html

Also make sure that you're not allowing the monitor to
display at resolutions it can't handle: Right click on the
desktop, click "properties," then the settings tab.
Click "Advanced" , and then the "Monitor" tab. Make sure
the "Hide modes this monitor cannot display" box is
checked.

Are you certain the monitor will work well on another
machine?

Right click on the desktop|Properties|Settings tab|Move the slider to
800x600|Set Colour Quality to 16bits|Choose Advanced button|Monitor tab|Set
refresh rate to 60Hz|Apply|OK|OK

Most monitors should be able to handle these settings.
You may also try adjusting the monitor using the OSD buttons on the front of
the monitor.

Generally speaking, the higher you can go with the refresh rate, the
smoother the screen is going to look to you. I had this pulsing you are
talking about on a 7 year old MAG CRT monitor that finally died about 2
months after this started happening. This doesn't mean that the monitor
is going to die, but it is a possibility. Also, I am going to guess
this monitor is not an LCD? If it is and is using DVI, you may want to
try playing with your video card drivers and try reducing the DVI
frequency or something similar and see if that helps.
