This is a recent development after the device has been running fine
for months. The switching seems to happen every 5 or 6 seconds. with
warning lights showing during the off phase.

Does this drive do this in any computer you connect it to or just this
one? Does this drive have an external power source or is it running
just through USB/FireWire? It sounds like failing hardware, but there
are a few things you need to do before you go down that road, so make
sure you run tests and make sure it is actually bad
