When I startup just before boot finishes and startup items
execute, my pc looks in the floppy 'A' drive. It does this
on shutdown as well. How can I eliminate this? Thanks.

This may be your antivirus doing this. I would actually leave it alone
as it is most likely checking to make sure that no viruses or anything
are on those disks that are trying to initialize or will initialize upon
restarting the computer.
