Just purchased a Panasonic GU87 off of Ebay. Contacted Cingular to get the
phone activated and they said even though the phone was unlocked, it would
not work with their network. I thought this sounded odd, but needed some
other opinions on this. I read a few posts from other users and some of the
replies to their posts referred them to the list of compatible phones on
Cingular's website. Is this a listing of all phones that will work with
them?

The GU87 works on GSM 900 / 1800 / 1900.
Cingular uses GSM 850 or 1900, depending on the area.

No. It is a listing of the phones that they sell and support. Any
*unlocked* GSM phone that operates on both 850 mhz (sometimes referred
to as 800) and 1900 mhz frequencies is what you need. A phone that is
single band (usually 1900 mhz only) will work on *part* of Cingular's
network; a dual band phone will open up the entire network to you.
900mhz and 1800mhz frequencies are used in other parts of the world.
Nothing wrong with having 'em; they're just useless here in North
America.
