floppy drive wants to format

everytime i put in a disk in the floppy drive, it wants
to format it. i have a program i need to install off of
it, but it wont read it, it wants to format it, which
will erase it. Why cant it access the data on the disk?

sounds like the floppy has been corrupted, try in another machine to see if
it works

if damaged, then run a file recovery tool on the disk and/or try running
CHKDSK /F A: on the floppy to fix any errors

Also, your floppy may have an alignment error and XP seems
to be more critical in this area. You may want to replace
your worn floppy drive with a new one.
