Did I Get Ripped Off?

I just received an Asus P4P800E-Deluxe motherboard that I purchased
from an online retailer. The motherboard arrived in a box that was
not shrink wrapped and the motherboard was in a bag that was not
sealed. Is this how Asus sends their motherboards to the retailers or
did I get a used product that someone else had already opened. Seems
strange they wouldn't either shrink wrap the box or at least seal the
bag the motherboard is in.

No, they don't come shrink-wrapped, nor is the anti-static bag sealed. You
did not get ripped off (at least for that reason).

No, you probably did not get ripped off if shipped from a
reputable dealer or re-seller. OTOH, were the IDE, E-IDE,
SATA cables, Utilitie/Setup cdrom, manual, etc., also in the
box?

Yes that is the way ASUS packages there boards. If you are intertested as to
when the board was
manufactured you can tell from the serial number. The first TWO digits of
the serial number is the
year and month the board was built. e.g. 4C would be Dec/2004 , 53 would be
March/2005.
The first digit is the year and the second is the month (A=Oct, B=Nov,
C=Dec.)

I too just bought an Asus P4P800-SE. It appears to be brand new (as it's
supposed to be) and works perfectly ... the box was not shrink-wrapped and
the board in an un-sealed anti-static bag. Apparently, this is how they
come.

Okay thanks. Good to know I didn't get ripped off (at least for taht

Yes all these items were in the box and all were in SEALED bags.
Strange that all these parts are in sealed bags but the static
sensitive board is not. Oh well, glad to know that's the way they are
sent and I didn't get ripped off. Thanks!

But, very frankly, I would demand a refund or replacement if
any of the items mentioned by GRider is missing from the box
or if there is any clear evidence of prior use, as indicated,
perhaps, by unsealed cdrom jackets, unpacked cables, loose
parts, etc., or even greasy or sweaty traces of fingerprints
throughout the manual or motherboard surfaces. The original
concern is whether or not an item ordered as "new" is really
"new" when shipped.

I think the guy is smart enough to figure that out. He was asking about the
box and anti-static bag, not the other stuff.

I don't think that any major motherboard manuafacturer seals the anti static bag or shrink wraps the box.

They probably don't want the potential of static shock damage from too
much handling by using a sealing machine. OTOH you'd think they would
slap a "Warning Static Senitive" sticker on the bag to seal it as this
could be done in a second by the person who puts the board in the bag,
unless that is done by a machine.

There's a chance the bags/boxes are opened for inspection at some stage.
I have never had a motherboard that has come in a sealed bag.
Any accessories are usually in sealed clear plastic bags, but I suspect a
machine packs these, not sure if mobos are handled the same.
The bags themselves have the anti-static symbol on them anyway, often with
print stating the same.

Probably because these bits and pieces, common to many motherboards,
are outsourced, and added to the motherboard in the packing area of
the production line.
