Hi there , sorry I'm a newbie when it comes to adding things to my comp but I
was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to add additional storage to
an emachines 330 computer as in the users guide it only mentions replacing ,
not adding to the hard drive . I'd obviously like to know this before I
purchase another drive , apologies for my lack of knowledge on these things
but all the talk of cables and connectors have my head spinning , lol .
Luckily I know a couple of people that will be able to perform the
installation or I'd really be in trouble , thanks a lot in advance

OK.... computer basics.....

Each motherboard usually has two IDE Controllers. Each IDE Controller can
handle two drives, whether optical or hard drives. An optical drive is
either a CD ROM, a CD-RW a DVD-ROM or a DVD-RW (where RW is generally
referred to as a burner).

So if you already have three optical drives and one hard drive, you're out
of luck as far as built in IDE Controllers are concerned, but you can add a
PCI card which has two more IDE Controllers on it.

Most PCs do NOT come with four IDE devices already installed. Most in fact
come with perhaps a single hard drive, DVD-ROM drive and a CD burner... so
that leaves space for one more drive to be added.

Chances are very high you can indeed add another hard drive to your system.
But since I can't find the 330 system listed at the EMachines website, I
cannot say 100% for sure that you can.

I've done just that for several friends and it's typically not a problem. I
have no idea what an emachine 330 is and couldn't reference that style on
their website but all that's needed is the physical space in the machine, a
spare power connector and the connection to the ide cable. The newer towers
make it real simple with a removable drive cage and the cables needed just
sitting there waiting for another disk.

One way to determine an answer is to open the case and see if there is a
physical space available to install the hard drive, and see if there is
a free IDE cable to attach to. If no free IDE cable, check to see if
there is a free connector on the motherboard to attach an IDE cable to.

Hi again , thanks a lot for the replies , I've had a look inside the casing
and it appears that the only two IDE slots are taken up by the hard drive and
the cdrw/dvdromand there's lots of cables tied up which appear to go nowhere
??? There is physical space inside the casing but if there's nowhere to
connect the new harddrive to is there anything else I can do short of
completely removing the original harddrive and completely replacing it or
buying another motherboard ? Thanks again for all the help so far ,

Hi again , sorry to make so many postings but I wanted to ask your opinion on
ide extenders as I've discovered a cheap supplier on ebay and would consider
buying that as opposed to messing about with a new motherboard as I only have
an intel celeron processor and would feel obliged to upgrade that too which
at present I can't really afford to do also I was eventually planning on
adding a DVDRW to my system so I really need to have 4 ports available , only
problem is I don't know if this extender would work with my system , here is
the link to the extender if you could shed some light on it for me , thanks
very much again :-

The extender is just another ide controller. Read Cari's post again because
your computer has the hardware to have 4 ide devices already without
purchasing anything else. If you see physical space to mount another disk
then you are all set. You stated in the original post that you have some
friends that can perform the installation, why not just have them look at
it.

Hi again, righto , bought the drive yesterday and my brother in law installed
it but for some strange reason it is being recognised as a DVD drive instead
of a hard drive , it is connected on the master/slave connector on the same
IDE as my CDRW/DVDROM and although my brother in law has built his own pc's
before he couldn't figure out why this was happening , the cd player is
working perfectly and therefore another friend said it must be connected up
ok as the new drive is connected as a secondary master , he also suggested I
install service pack 1 and a thing called "big drive enabler" which I have
done but it seems to not have made any difference and as it is showing as a
dvd drive it appears I will be unable to format it until I get it sorted , am
just about to peruse the site for anything similar happening to other people
and will post if I get it sorted, thanks again for all your help people it is
much appreciated

Are you sure that the new drive isn't being shown as D: ?

Your original CDRW/DVDROM may be showing up as E: now, if it WAS a D:
before you installed the second hard drive.

Hi there have everything sorted in the comp now , it stopped showing at all
but found a post which described how to sort the problem , hadn't been able
to partition and format it because I couldn't gain access to it but
eventuallythrough right clicking my computer I was able to manage the devices
and do just that . I only have one problem on my computer now which is that
disk cleanup isn't working and wasn't before I installed the new drive so I'm
about to go round the site and see if I can find out how to rectify it. Thank
you all very much for your advice it was very much appreciated
