Hello...

I'd appreciate some help.

I have a A7N8X Deluxe Version 2 motherboard, with Bios version 1007.

I currently have an IDE boot drive. I want to replace it and install a SATA
drive. What do I have to do? Do I need to download anything special, or
will the drive, etc., be recognized by the Windows XP Professional
installation disk.

Also, would appreciate recommendations on a good SATA hard drive. About
200-250 GB, 7200 rpm. Would like it to be quiet and reliable.

Thanks in advance.

Maxtor 10 is getting all the praise right now.
Enable boot from scsi in bios
I belive winxp recognises the drive on installation
In win2k you have use F6 option to install raid drivers from floppy, during
win installation.

Ummm not quite. If the OP is planning on installing to the new
disk(unformatted/unpartitioned) then he will need to intall the drivers
during install using the F6 option with WinXP as well. You do not need to
set the Bios to boot to SCSI( I don't with my A7N8X v2.0)at least).
Natively WinXP does not recognize a SATA drive controller, at least SP1
doesn't. One other thing is that if you are using a drive with a partition
of over 137 GB's then you will have to use a slipstreamed WinXP cd with
Service Pack 1 as a minimum. So you either have to partition the drive to
have less than 137 GB partitions or use the slipstreamed CD for install.

See Ben Pope's site for more info.

I will refrain from making any drive manufacturer suggestion. I have always
used Western Digital drives myself but no experience with other SATA drives.

I have the same mobo, but I don't boot off the SATA-controller. I run a
Maxtor DM9 disk off of the SilImage controller. All fine.
With latest BIOS there is an option to boot from SATA or SCSI. If no
SCSI-controllers installed, just use current BIOS and use SCSI as a boot
option.
Try getting a slipstreamed SP1 or SP2 installation of WIndows for the >137GB
issue. You will need to prepare the Silicon image 3112a drivers on a floppy
and hit F6 under install to give Win the drivers. Even SP2 does not have
them out of the box.
