New device, scans OK but requires that I use their abominal SmarThru Image
Manager(developed for Samsung by Russian Word Ltd in 2001) for scanning.

The device is not listed under Scanners and Scanners, but shows two Twain
sources, one USB-based, and the other presumably for parallel-port. Driver
version, according to SmarThru is 0.97, but I cannot locate a scanner .inf
file for the Add device wizard.

Samsung tech support seem clueless about the issue.

Any tips?

I looked all over for the drivers or any information on this MFP. I
can't find it on Samsung's website and only find one place to buy it. I
found the 4216 which I am going to guess is the newer version of this
(available in US). Where do you live and where did you buy it? When
you connect the MFP to the computer, does it bring up the Hardware
Wizard asking for drivers or does it automatically install it for you?
If it asks for drivers, have you tried the CD that came with it?
Unfortunately, most of this is in Samsung's hands and you are going to
have to deal with them.

I am not sure if there is a such thing as generic drivers in this case.
I would keep trying with Samsung Tech Support until they help, or
since it is new, return it and get something that actually has support ;)

Sorry it is the 4216 (the only place the model is written, is in fine print
on the back of the unit).

I live in Australia, and bought it from a major dealer this week.

Hardware wizard

Yes, tried the CD.

I got a call back from Samsung much later, saying that none of their current
products support WIA, but that future ones would.

That is interesting. Well at least here is the support site:
http://www.samsungusa.com/cgi-bin/nabc/support/b2c_support_product_results.jsp?eUser=&CatPath=%2fComputers+and+Related%2fMFP%2fMFP&_categorySearch:_ListLevel4=63936

I couldn't figure out a way to get a more direct link :)

I guess I would see if Samsung will offer the ability to use WIA for
that model through future software updates. It shouldn't be that
difficult for them to do. Oh, and here is the latest software (found on
the above page, but just in case the link doesn't work or something):

FWIW, it seems that they have a very erratic driver distribution pattern.
Sometimes the online drivers are older than those on the CD, even though
they are all dated as 2001 or earlier. The SmarThru software online appears
to be the same as that on the CD.
