I'm having the devil of a time trying to get an HP LaserJet 5N printer
to print out of its optional lower paper tray (Paper Tray #3) from a
Windows 98SE system.
I've tried the built-in Windows 98 driver as well as the "HP LaserJet
5N and 5L/6L Series PCL5e Driver" and "HP LaserJet 5 and 6P Family
Enhanced PCL Driver" downloaded from the HP support web site. These
drivers let the user select Tray #3, but the upper paper tray (#2) is
still used regardless. This occurs whether the printer is attached
directly via the parallel port or whether it is connected to over the
network.
The bizarre thing is that there are a couple of other Win98 systems in
the office that do not display this symptom. Using the HP "Enhanced
PCL" driver, they have no difficulty in printing from the optional
bottom paper tray. So it does not appear to be a hardware problem with
the printer itself. It does not seem to be related to any particular
application, all yield the same result.
In addition, I notice when using Windows XP with this printer there is
a section in the driver options to configure the hardware options,
including the lower tray. When this is configured correctly the XP
system also has no trouble using this tray.
Is there anything similar in the setup sections of the Win98 drivers?
(Maybe the lower tray is being ignored because the driver "thinks" it
is not there?) I checked but did not see anything that looked likely.
This problem is driving me nuts -- any and all help greatly
appreciated!!
