Hi,

I have a big problem with my system. I can get my modem works in a
stable way. I'm using Windows 2000 Professional and Linus Fedora Core
3.

Sometimes the systems detects the modem and it works correctly. But
after a boot the modem simply disappear from the device manager. I only
make this work in Windows.

I don't know what happens and I tried a lot of methods (change to
another PCI slot, reset and change BIOS configuration, reinstall
drivers, clean the card pins with rubber...), but nobody made the modem
stands.

I notice a trick thing. When I reboot the system from Windows the
Pentium 4 logo appears without the Hyper Thread sign, during the system
boot. When I reboot the system from Fedora the HT sign appears again. I
don't know why this happens but I think that both systems may be
changing some Bios configuration.

If anyone had this kind of problem or any sugestion, please help...

A 56k modem. That must be a whopping $10 or $15 or so to buy a new
one.

So...

I have another PC with a USR 56k ISA, and it is one of best I worked.
Unhapply, my new motherboard has not an ISA slot.

Any way, what modem do you sugest? Remember that that I want use
Windows 2k and Fedora Core 3. Please specify the model, because I don't
want to waste money again.

If anyone solve this kind of problem without to buy another modem,
please help me...

I tried looking on the Intel site, but could not find any technical
info on 536EP. Apparently, the chip runs on 3.3V and 1.3V, and has
some power saving features, but whether these power saving features
are causing the modem to "disappear" is anyone's guess. In any case,
I would not use a rubber eraser to clean the contacts on the
card, as this will remove the gold plating on the pins, and the
metal underneath is more prone to attack by oxidation.

My personal preference is to use an external RS-232 modem, as it
eliminates so many problems. (I also like "da flashing lites" :-)
But, for the price you pay for one of these old modem designs,
you could buy a handful of Winmodems.
